Why use Shiatsu?

Shiatsu is considered to be one of the best health care methods in daily life.

The originator of Shiatsu, Tokujiro Namikoshi, was born in 1905 in Hokkaido, Japan.
As a boy, Tokujiro managed to cure his mother’s rheumatoid arthritis through massage. He went on to study the human body, systemized his thumb pressure method, and in 1925 set up the first Shiatsu Institute.

Shiatsu is now internationally accepted as one of the world’s most effective healing art forms.

If we are leading a natural healthy life, there is no need for medicine except in an emergency.

Today, so many people are unhealthy, suffering from stress and problems; with sleep, after effects of prescription drugs, headaches and the effects of a poor diet.

We are so accustomed to modern drug therapy that we have forgotten the importance of releasing our body’s own healing power. This is where Shiatsu is of most value.

What is Shiatsu?

‘shi’ means finger
‘atsu’ means pressure in Japanese.

Shiatsu is more than simply a relaxing massage. Shiatsu therapy is form of manipulation administered by theraputic pressure from the therapist’s thumbs, fingers, elbow, knee or foot to release the body’s vital energy.

This energy or KI (pronounced ‘kee’) flows throughout the body in a series of points called meridians. When our vital energy or KI, stops flowing freely a symptom such as cramp, stiffness or pain in the body will occur. Shiatsu uses pressure, dynamic rotations and stretches to improve the flow of the body’s vital energy.
